Paper with Personality

Learn western style sheet forming while customizing your hand-made paper with stencils, pulp painting, watermarks, and inclusions.  Decorate your paper as much as you want, or leave an elegant watermark to denote your design.  This papermaking class will cover all the basic steps of making paper, from raw fiber, to the beaten pulp, through sheet forming, pressing, and drying.  Various materials will be supplied.

Japanese Papermaking

This workshop will introduce students to the traditional method of Japanese Papermaking using Kozo, Gampi, and Abaca fibers.

Momigami and Paste Painting

Instructor: Richard Aldorasi

Date and Time: June 19 11AM-4PM

Explore Momogami and paste painting, two unique techniques used for paper decoration. Momigami is the ancient Japanese technique of coating kozo paper with konnyaka paste, then crumpling and kneading, thus creating millions of wrinkles and ridges. Students will also learn 18th century paste painting, which combines the use of wheat starch, water, and pigments in creating intricate patterns on paper.

Rescue Book Journal Making

Use very basic pamplet stitch to transform a beautiful vintage book into your next art journal. Choose white and black papers, colored papers, vellums oldpapers, or envelopes (well, let’s just say that there are many choices!). You will learn to reinorce a fragile book spine using a piercing template, pamphlet stitch and stencils. These lovely journals begin as old friends and just get better as you work in them.

Turkish Marbling

Instructor: Richard Aldorasi

Learn the preparation of a wide range of colors used in Turkish (ebru) marbling as well as the elegant method of figuring; thus producing the floral effects that have for centuries captured the minds and hearts this Ottoman/Islamic art. In addition to these traditional techniques, explore the wide range of contemporary marbling. Each student will print a 15 x 45 inch silk scarf and several matching paper prints used to create cards, wrapping paper, gift boxes, etc.

Japanese Collage

Instructor: Andrea Snyder

Here's a workshop where you can never make a mistake! Using wheat paste as the adhesive, students will learn traditional Japanese collage on washi papers. This workshop is chock full of fun! All levels welcome.

Papermaking from Invasive Plants

Instructor: Louise Barteau Chodoff

Date and Time: July 18 11AM-4PM

Learn how to make beautiful hand-made paper from non-native plants such as Garlic Mustard and Japanese Knotweed. This workshop begins with the communal activities of harvesting, preparing, cooking, and beating the fibers. We will use the fibers to create beautiful sheets of paper for participants to take home. This  workshop teaches all the basics of papermaking by hand from plant fibers while supporting local biodiversity by using non-native invasive plants that compete with and drive out native plants that supply food and cover for local wildlife.

Bookbinding

This workshop will introduce participants to various bookbinding techniques, including accordion fold, pamphlet stitch, long stitch, Japanese stab bindings and other adhesive and non-adhesive binding methods. Although the focus of this workshop will be the construction of the blank book, students may bring their own materials, images, poetry, decorative papers, etc., to be bound into a book format.
