Enoch Rittenhouse Home
This home was built by Enoch Rittenhouse (1773-1855), a descendent of
William Rittenhouse, about 1845. The home was built at a time when the
Rittenhouse family enclave was becoming a recognizable village, with a
school, a chapel, a fire company, a blacksmith and wheelwright. It is an
example of the rural Greek revival style of architecture. In 2001, the
building underwent major interior and exterior restoration. The first floor
of the building houses the exhibit We Lived Along the Wissahickon:
The Blue Bell Hill Oral History Project . The project records experiences
of people who lived in the community of Blue Bell Hill, which developed
on once Rittenhouse property, when RittenhouseTown declined as a village
and became a part of Fairmount Park. (labeled 208 on map)
