Rittenhouse Homestead

Rittenhouse Homestead Next Stop

The Rittenhouse Homestead built in 1707 by Claus Rittenhouse (1666-1734), son of William the original papermaker. It is the oldest surviving structure on the site and one of the oldest in the region. The 1707 date can be seen carved into both a door lintel and a date stone on the original building. An addition in the Georgian style was constructed in the early 18th century. David Rittenhouse, mathematician, astronomer, statesman, and first president of the United States Mint was born in the homestead, and it remained occupied by successive generations of the Rittenhouse family until it became the property of Fairmount Park. In 2001, the exterior of this building was restored to its eighteenth century appearance and a plan for a future exhibit is in development. (labeled 207 on map)
